By decision of the Ministry of Economy & Finance, the Greek Government, through the National Land Association, carried out the purchase of the Residence of Eleftherios Venizelos in Halepa, Hania on March 28th 2002.
The residence in question was ceded by the National Land Association to the Foundation in a ceremony, held on Sunday, March 31st, after the annual memorial service of Eleftherios and Sophocles Venizelos.
Nikos Hristodoulakis, Minister of Economy & Finance, delivered the cession to the Chairman of the Foundation, Irineos Galanakis, Metropolitan of Kissamos & Selino.
With this cession the connection of the residence of Venizelos to the Foundation is materialised in the best possible way. The meaning of the cession is substantial and symbolic. It is substantial as the residence will be restored and converted into a museum and a research centre for the life and work of Venizelos. It is also symbolic, as the Foundation is now closely related to the place associated with the historical and personal course of the great politician from his childhood to his last days.
