Piraeus honored with spectacular events the 70 years of the death of Eleftherios Venizelos, on Saturday 15th and Sunday 17th of April 2006. The country's largest port was closely related to the first steps of Venizelos' political career and he developed special bonds with the Cretans of the area.
The events were organised by the Municipality of Piraeus, the Cretan Fraternity of Piraeus “Omonia” and the Cultural Development Municipal Enterprise of Piraeus, under the auspices of the Foundation and the Prefecture of Piraeus.
The inauguration of the photograph exhibition for Eleftherios Venizelos was held on Saturday, April 15th, at the Cretan Fraternity Mansion of Piraeus. The exhibition will be open to the public until Tuesday, April 18th, and the visiting hours are: every day 09:00-12:00 and 17:00-20:00.
After the commemorative ceremony and wreath laying at the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos (Municipal Theatre of Pireaus square), speeches were given by:
-Nikolaos Emm. Papadakis, Foundation CEO, on the topic "The political cost of Eleftherios Venizelos' foreign policy. The case of Cyprus".
-Kiriakos Mitsotakis, MP of Nea Dimokratia, on the topic "Eleftherios Venizelos, always contemporary".
-Mimis Androulakis, MP of PASOK, on the topic "Eleftherios Venizelos: A model leader for the present time?" (Theatre "ATTIKON", Municipal Theatre of Piraeus square).
During the event, a DVD was projected about the 5 years of the foundation of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” and the film by Vasilis Maros "Eleftherios Venizelos' Greece". The event closed with music and dances. The photographs of the exhibition and the sound documentaries of the event came from the Foundation archive.
