The presentation of the book "Η εκκλησία και ο Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος" by Andreas Nanakis, Metropolitan of Arkalohori, Kasteli and Vianos, published by the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" and the editions Vanias, was held on Saturday, October 4th, 2008, in Arkalohori of Heraklio. The event was organised by the Municipality of Arkalohori and the Foundation.
Introductory speeches were given by the Mayor of Arkalohori, Haralambos Giannopoulos and the Mayor of Hania and Vice Chairman of the Foundation, Kiriakos Virvidakis. The speakers were: Dimitris Platis, Secretary General of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, Petros Efthimiou, M.P. of the second district of Athens – former minister, and Georgios Saridakis, President of the National Centre for Social Solidarity – former Member of the European Parliament.
All speakers referred to the significance of the book and the author's contribution to the Metropolis of Arklohori, Kasteli and Vianos, as well as the work of the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" in Greece. The Foundation's CEO, Nikolaos Papadakis, spoke about the major contribution of Eleftherios Venizelos to Orthodoxy, as he succeeded in keeping the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul. The coordinator of the conference was the Lawyer Dimitris Xiritakis, and the author closed the event by thanking the speakers and the people who attended the conference, and especially the Municipality of Arkalohori and the Foundation for the organisation of the conference.
Irineos (Archbishop of Crete), Anthimos (Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamos), Amfilohios (Metropolitan of Kisamos and Selino), Eugenios (bishop of Knossos), Stavros Arnaoutakis (Member of the European Parliament), Manolis Stratakis, Maria Skrafnaki, Giannis Skoulas, Vasilis Kegeroglou and Kostas Badouvas (MPs of Heraklio), Vagelio Shinaraki (Prefect of Heraklio), Giannis Kourakis (Mayor of Heraklio) and representatives of cultural institutions etc. attended the conference.
