90 years of the battle of Skra. Events in Hania.

On Friday, September 12th, 2008, the Municipality of Hania and the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" organised an event for the 90 years of the battle of Skra, one of the most important battles of the First World War, which was decisive for the future of Greek Macedonia. The divisions of Crete, Archipelago and Serres fought in this battle and had hundreds of victims.
The event was attended by a multi-member delegation from Axioupolis of Kilkis, headed by the Mayor Sonia Simeonidou.
The first part of the event (9th Primary School of Hania) comprised a commemorative ceremony for the victims of the Battle of Skra, headed by Damaskinos, the Metropolitan of Kydonia and Apokoronas, and the unveiling of the commemorative plaque placed on Skra street.
The second part of the event was held at the Foundation (Metropolitan Irineos Galanakis Mansion).  The Mayor of Axioupolis Sonia Simeonidou and the Deputy Mayor of Chania Michael Dallas opened the event. The CEO of the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" gave a speech on the topic "The struggle of Eleftherios Venizelos for Macedonia during the First World War" about the diplomatic struggles of Venizelos for the safeguarding of Macedonia. The Municipality of Axioupolis, the Local Council of Skra and the Cultural Association of Skra were acclaimed associates of the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" and the Foundation's new publication "Eleftherios Venizelos and Macedonia, 1914-1918. The importance of the Battle of Skra (a review)" by Nikolaos Papadakis, was available during the event. The money from the sales of the book will go to the Museum in Skra.
The events for the 90 years of the battle of Skra will be completed on Sunday, September 14th, at the City Hall of Hania with the ceremony of fraternisation of the Municipalities of Chania and Axioupolis.

 THE ASSOCIATION OF THE FRIENDS OF THE FOUNDATION IN MACEDONIA
On the initiative of the Mayor of Axioupoli, Sonia Simeonidou, an association of the Friends of the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" in West and Central Macedonia will be founded. Important personalities of the Local Administration, scientists and ordinary people, admirers of Eleftherios Venizelos, will participate in this attempt in order to support the Foundation's goals.
