28 Mar Symposium “Eleftherios Venizelos and cultural policy” and exhibition of sculptures by Yannis Pappas (Athens, 20-22.11.2008).
A symposium on the topic “Eleftherios Venizelos and cultural policy” was organised by the Benaki Museum and the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, at the Benaki Museum (138 Piraeus street), on November 21st and 22nd.
The Symposium aimed at presenting the cultural innovations introduced during Venizelos’ period, 1910-1936, that were based on the political innovations inspired by Venizelos himself and the political party he established and headed. The Symposium comprised two main units:
The first one referred to the institutional dimensions and the implementation of public policy on matters of culture institution development or the enhancement of relevant state interventions: the Athens School of Fine Arts, the Academy of Athens, archaeological excavations, cultural heritage management and development institutions.
The second unit referred to the artistic creation of the period and examined: a) plastic arts: painting, engraving, literature and plastic arts, sculpture, b) literature and cinema: indirect, direct and symbolistic presence of Venizelos in literature, reflection of the period’s movements through literature magazines and cinema production in Interwar Greece and c) music: Venizelos in popular and folklore songs, music education and National music of the period.
The exhibition and the symposium were organised under the auspices of the Greek Parliament.
