19 Dec Exhibition “Politics and Society in the Cretan State 1898–1913”
The exhibition“Politics and Society in the Cretan State 1898–1913” was inaugurated on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Center of Mediterranean Architecture in Chania, and will run until January 31, 2025. It is organized by the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy in collaboration with the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos,” and co-organized by the Municipality of Chania.
The exhibition showcases historical documents and photographs, highlighting not only key historical events but also aspects of daily life, institutional transformations, urban and rural development, and advances in education and culture during the era of the Cretan State.
In his opening remarks, Nikolas Papadakis-Papadis, General Director of the “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” Foundation, expressed his joy for the long-standing collaboration with the Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament. He also referenced the success of the exhibition’s presentation in Athens and their recent joint publication“From Sevres to Lausanne”, soon to be released. In the same spirit, Evanthis Hatzivassiliou, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Parliament Foundation, praised the fruitful partnership and emphasized that “we have done great things together and more is yet to come.” Ms. Ismini Kriari, whose private collection contributed some of the exhibition’s materials, eloquently presented the theme and the historical period it covers. Greetings were given by Chania MPs Sevi Voloudaki and Alexandros Markogiannakis, Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Kalogeris, Chania Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis, and Sfakia Mayor Ioannis Zervos.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the exhibition led by the curator George Stathakopoulos, Head of the Exhibitions Department of the Parliament Foundation, and Chara Apostolaki, responsible for the collections of the “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” Foundation.
