Screening of the documentary “Venizelos, Struggle for Asia Minor” in New York.

In the heart of New York, often referred to as the capital of the world, the film “Venizelos, Struggle for Asia Minor” was successfully screened on Friday, September 13, 2024, as part of a special honorary feature during the 14th New York Greek Film Festival. The event was graced by the presence of the Consul of Greece in New York, Mr. Petros Dorizas, and the Vice President of the World Council of Cretans, Mr. Fotis Fiotodimitrakis. The Ambassador of Greece to the USA, Ekaterini Nasika, stated in her message: “This work enlightens us on the life and achievements of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of Greece’s greatest statesmen, reminding us of the importance of remembering and learning from our past as we build our future.” The New York Greek Film Festival is an institution that offers access to Greek films not only
to the Greek-American community but also to the wider American audience of New York. Nikos Kastrinakis, President of Venizelos Foundation USA, expressed his gratitude for the strong participation of the American public and stated: “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the 14th New York Greek Film Festival and its Director, Ms. Maria Tzompanaki, for giving us the opportunity to present the documentery “Venizelos, Struggle for Asia Minor” to the American audience in New York. The large turnout demonstrates that this screening is well worth repeating.” Mr. Kastrinakis extended his heartfelt thanks to the Cretan Association “Pasifai,” of New
York, the Cretan Association “Omonoia” of New York, the Cretan Association “Minos” of New York, and the Pancretan Union of America for their support.
The film is a production of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” and is based on the book by the Foundation’s Director, Mr. Nikos Papadakis-Papadakis, with English subtitles. Directed by Nikos Dayadas, this documentary highlights Eleftherios Venizelos, the great statesman of modern Greece, as he faces the immense challenges of the pivotal decade that includes the Balkan Wars, World War I, and culminates with the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. Venizelos’ struggle is portrayed through dramatized scenes, rare archival footage, and expert interviews.
